Tree pruning is required by the City of Happy Valley. The City requires limbs to be trimmed to 12 feet over a sidewalk and 16 feet over a street. This allows proper room for pedestrians and school busses.
Homeowners recommend having the entire tree shaped - in addition to pruning - to prevent wind, snow and ice damage, reduce fall leaf cleanup, encourage downward root growth and keep the tree a healthy, manageable size.
Easy pruning can be done by hand. Specific limb saws make the job simple for limbs larger than 2 inch diameter. For limbs smaller than two inches a lop shears is recommended.

As homeowners, trees within planting stripsare our responsibility and as they grow larger the roots of older trees can be a big problem for sidewalks, grass, and irrigation. Tree roots can lift sidewalks and provide an inhospitable environment for grass and crush irrigation, resulting in unsightly planting strips. Further damage can be prevented by grinding surface roots. A stump grinder will make quick work of surface roots allowing simple repair of irrigation systems and replanting of grass.
For DIYers, roots can be removed by lifting sidewalk slabs, removing roots, and placing the sidewalk slabs back down. This can be done without damaging the sidewalk slab or paying for an expensive concrete slab re-pour.
If hiring this work, find a contractor with mini excavator or tracked skid steer that has a cold planer attachment. These devices can remove surface roots quickly.
The City of Happy Valley provides guidance on root barrier installation to mitigate future structure or sidewalk damage. Further information on spacing can be found in Happy Valley Municipal Code .
